Cyber Risk During The Holidays

Does Increased Sales Mean Increased Risk?

With the holidays approaching, many businesses, especially those in the retail sector, are gearing up for increased sales. Website traffic tends to skyrocket as online vendors initiate their seasonal and Black Friday discounts.

As a hacker, spikes in online traffic are the perfect opportunity. Customers are inundated with marketing efforts, making it hard to differentiate legitimate offerings from scams. Additionally, personal information is entered at staggering rates to make online purchases, leaving massive amounts of data to be compromised.

As a consumer or business owner, it is crucial to know the different cyber risks you may be exposed to this holiday season and have the proper cyber insurance in place.

Cyber Risk and The Holidays

Unfortunately, cyber risk is an inevitable part of the holidays. Cybercriminals know that e-commerce is one of the predominant ways consumers shop, and they are ready to take advantage of any vulnerabilities.

As a shopper, be sure you evaluate marketing material and sale offerings closely. Are there any typos in the text or strange email addresses used? Phishing attempts are more easily disguised among the numerous advertisements distributed during the holidays. Be sure you are shopping through legitimate websites and retailers.

As a business owner, do you have the proper cybersecurity protocols in place to handle increased online traffic? Ensure customers enter personal and financial information into secure portals only, and consider using multi-factor authentication for added protection. In the event of a data breach, be sure you have a top-notch cyber insurance policy ready to intervene.
