Get It Right: What to Do (and Not Do) When Filing a Commercial Auto Claim

What is Commercial Auto Insurance?

Commercial auto insurance functions similarly to personal auto insurance, encompassing liability, collision, and comprehensive coverages. Additionally, it protects you from uninsured or underinsured motorists and can cover medical bills.

The key difference with commercial auto insurance is that it also covers drivers and vehicles in a business setting. For instance, driving a company car, transporting business products or materials, or driving other employees or clients are all activities covered under a commercial policy.

Commercial Auto Claims: What to Do

Here are tips to follow when you need to make a commercial auto claim:

  • Gather as much information as possible. Obtain driver’s licenses, vehicle details, insurance information, police reports, and take as many photos as possible to document the scene.
  • Notify your insurance agent to confirm if you should in fact start a claim witth your company (some situations may not require that).
  • If filing a claim, submit claims forms, and schedule a meeting with an adjuster as necessary.
  • Select a well-qualified auto body shop (approved by your provider) to provide a quote and make the necessary repairs.
  • Follow up! Keeping in touch with your insurance company throughout the process can help the claim proceed in a timely manner.

Commercial Auto Claims: What NOT to Do

Be sure to avoid the following when making a commercial auto claim:

  • Don’t delay!  Your policy may include specific timelines for filing a claim and submitting supporting documentation.
  • In the event of an accident, you may feel pulled to apologize immediately, but do not admit fault. It’s important to let the insurers and police determine who was at fault.
  • Do not forget to notify your employer or fleet manager, as they may need to help you file the claim with your insurer.
