How to Defend Against Cybercriminals During an IT Outage

Cybercriminals Hiding Nearby

Cybercriminals are always hiding nearby, waiting for their opportunity to strike. As soon as a business’s IT network is weakened, hackers jump into action to access data.

The best way to avoid security vulnerabilities during an IT outage is to ensure you and your employees know what to look for to detect cyber attacks. Let’s examine some common strategies cybercriminals use and how your company can avoid breaches.

What NOT to Do During an IT Outage

The following are things you and your employees should NOT do during an IT outage:

  • Links & Attachments: Do not click links or download attachments if unsure of the sender or why they were sent to you. Sometimes, all it takes is one click to give a cybercriminal the green light.
  • Remote Help: Hackers sometimes disguise themselves as other companies offering to help resolve an IT issue. Do not let any unknown person or business access your computer or data before verifying their credentials.
  • Passwords: In the event of an IT outage, never supply your password to a third party via email or use your credentials to log in to an unknown website. Cybercriminals use these avenues to obtain usernames and passwords and gain access to company servers.
  • Misspellings: Misspellings in links, email addresses, or website names should be a significant red flag. Hackers often utilize very subtle typos to give the illusion that messages are coming from a trusted source or that links will take you to a legitimate website.

The First Step

The first step in your cybersecurity strategy should always be ensuring your business has a robust cyber insurance policy. Even with the best training and security, data breaches are common, but with the right preparation, you can navigate them with confidence.
