When Ransomware Strikes: Is Your Business Insured?

Ransomware is one of the most prevalent types of cyberattacks today. Understanding how ransomware works can help you identify potential vulnerabilities in your business.

Step-by-Step of Ransomware

Let’s examine the step-by-step process of how ransomware operates and why it can be a highly effective tool used by cybercriminals.

Step 1: Infection

Hackers employ phishing techniques, malicious links, and malware to infiltrate the target’s system and files. Often, cybercriminals will monitor the target ahead of time, looking for outdated security systems and weak points.

Step 2: Encryption or Lockdown

Once the user falls victim to the phishing email, clicks the dangerous link, or downloads the infected software, the ransomware immediately encrypts files. In some cases, it shuts down the entire system, leaving only a ransom message from the hackers.

Step 3: Ransom Demand

Cyber attackers threaten data breaches or data destruction if the organization doesn’t complete the ransom payment.

Step 4: Payment

It’s crucial to note that payments often do not resolve ransomware attacks. Some hackers will restore systems after payment; others will receive the funds and disappear while simultaneously proceeding with permanent data removal or public leaks.

Cyber Insurance Protection

The best way to stay protected in the event of a ransomware attack is cyber insurance. A cyber insurance policy will cover the costs of the ransom payment, data recovery, incident response, PR firms, and legal expenses associated with the attack.

Without proper coverage, your business will be facing an expensive and messy cleanup on your dime. If you have questions about how cyber insurance could be helpful for your company, please contact Steve Longenecker (303-808-9351 x2) at Mountain Insurance: Longmont.
