Cyber Insurance 101: Types of Cyber Attacks

What is a Cyber Attack?

Cyber attacks occur when a person or organization attempts to cause damage to or access computers or electronic information illegally. A successful cyber attack can lead to financial loss for a business and significant data breaches.

The danger of cyber attackers is they often fly under the radar. Their tactics are designed to be disguised and go unnoticed by the user.

Types of Cyber Attacks

Cybercriminals use various types of attacks to obtain access and information,  both yours and possibly those of your customers as well.  Here are a few of the most common:

  • Malware: Malware disrupts a computer’s functions and can compromise data or spy on users.
  • Phishing: One of the most common types of cyber attacks, phishing involves sending emails that appear to be from trusted organizations in hopes of obtaining sensitive information.
  • Password: These attacks involve physically stealing passwords, manipulating users into giving up their passwords, or using tactics and software designed to guess passwords.
  • Man-In-The-Middle: This type of attack consists of a cybercriminal intercepting communications between two parties to steal information.
  • URL: URL attacks involve changing the URL of a well-known site just slightly enough to direct users to a malicious website.
  • Denial of Service: A denial of service attack overwhelms a business’s servers and forces a shutdown, halting standard operations.
  • Insider: Insider attacks come from an employee inside the organization gaining unwarranted access to computer systems and data.
  • Drive-By: Drive-by attacks are when hackers are able to infect a user’s device by encouraging them to visit an unsecured website.
