Pollution Insurance 101

What is Pollution Insurance?

Pollution insurance is additional coverage that protects a business from claims related to damages or injuries caused by pollutants of many types.

Typically, these cases involve property and environmental damage or illness due to toxin exposure. While pollution claims aren’t all that common, they can be costly and complex when they arise.

On the surface, it may seem like your business is not associated with pollutants. However, most companies handle pollutant-classified materials in some capacity. Let’s take a look at a few of these examples below.

Pollutant Claim Scenarios

The following are a few examples of different pollution claim scenarios that your business may face:

  • A custom builder exposes a homeowner to lead-based paint while remodeling a historic home, leading to significant medical bills.
  • A tank storing chemicals at a manufacturing facility suffers a leak and pollutes the stream on the neighboring property.
  • A trucking company’s oil tanker gets into an accident, causing an oil spill across the freeway and into the storm water system.
  • A construction crew damages a sewer line during on-site earthwork, contaminating the surrounding soil and groundwater.
  • Pesticides used at a business facility make their way onto the farmer’s crops next door.

The above scenarios demonstrate why pollution claims may be brought against a company. Before jumping into a pollution insurance policy, talk with your insurance agent about what makes the most sense for your business.
